The hardest part about trying to eat healthy is figuring out what to eat during snack time. For your major meals of the day you can cook or find a healthy option on or close to campus but what should you eat in between meals? It’s so easy to walk into the school store or go to the vending machine and grab a Snickers bar or a bag of Skittles. Although these options might taste good, they are not the best for you.

Don’t get discouraged though because there are plenty of foods to snack on that are not only delicious but also organic. Annie’s is a brand that offers numerous amounts of products to snack on while you sit in your three hour class or have a movie night with friends. They have the organic version of all your favorite snacks that are usually filled with artificial flavors and colors.

Annie’s has organic fruit snacks in six different flavors ranging from Pink Lemonade to Berry Patch. They have organic snack mixes, organic pretzels, organic granola bars and much more.

The best part about Annie’s products is most grocery stores with a health food aisle carry these foods. So the next time you have a craving for an afternoon snack, stop by Shopper’s or Giant and pick up some Annie’s.

Everyone knows that the life of a college student is hectic and involves late hours, hard work, and an unbalanced diet. Even though Towson University offers its students healthy choices, sometimes it is still hard to figure what to eat and how much. Good eating habits contribute to you not only having more energy but also a better quality of life.

If you’re trying to get on the right track Towson offers diet and nutrition counseling with a registered dietician at Dowell Health Center.  You can learn how good nutrition can help better control a medical problem or how to consume a better balance of vitamins and minerals.

The best part of this service is it‘s free.

If you’re interested in making an appointment call Kerry Ballek. Prior to your appointment you will be asked to email the dietician a food recall form 24 hours before your visit. Also, you will be required to submit a brief medical history.

For those of you 21 and older, Friday night means it’s time to hit a Towson bar or local restaurant with your friends. But for the healthy eater, there is not always that much available to eat that isn’t fake, frozen, or fried. That has all changed since Zia’s Café has happy hour specials every Friday.

Starting at 5 p.m., you can go to Zia’s café and get raw, gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian or meat appetizers for $3.  Also, you don’t have to worry about being over charged for watered down drinks because it’s BYOB meaning you can bring your own drinks. Towson Wine and Spirits has 10% off everything in the store on Friday.

This Friday some of the specials include Artichoke Quesadillas stuffed with artichokes, red bell peppers, caramelized onions and Feta. If you’re not in the mood for Mexican, try their Petit Salmon En Croute made with dill spelt pastry with wild Alaskan salmon and roasted garlic aioli.

Check Zia’s Café Facebook page for a listing of their Friday specials.

Since there are so many fake “healthy” dining choices out there, it’s nice to eat at a restaurant where you don’t have to worry about what kind of antibiotics your chicken was injected with or what nice little concoction of pesticides are in your lettuce.  This dining experience is offered in Towson at a charming little restaurant called Zia’s Cafe.

They use locally grown organic produce and their meat, poultry and dairy are all hormone and antibiotic-free. Zia’s offers something for everyone whether you’re a vegan, vegetarian, or like to chow down on meat.

As of February 1st , Zia’s Cafe is now offering dinner with a brand new dinner menu. Start off with a Mango Avocado Salad with black sesame seeds covered in a beet-vanilla vinaigrette. Try Fish Tacos made with wild-caught flounder, queso fresco, cabbage, avocado and lemon garlic yogurt sauce in a sprouted corn tortilla for an entree. Then finish the meal with a Nutty Banana Smoothy made with organic peanut butter, bananas, dates and almond milk. These are just a few of the mouth watering options on the menu.

Check out  Zia’s Cafe’s Facebook page for daily dinner specials.

Dinner is available  Wednesday and Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday  from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. For those of you 21 and over it’s BYOB  (Bring Your Own Beverages) during dinner and there is no corkage fee.

With all the different brands and products out there claiming to be healthy or “good for you” it may be a little hard to decipher which ones really are.   My blog will help keep people in the Towson area up to date on the world of healthy eating.
